I work with strong, smart women who have done a ton of personal work and accomplished much in their lives, yet still struggle with their weight.
They’re demoralized because they feel like they’ve tried everything and failed. They are leaders in their lives, from running a business to running a household. They are smart, funny, driven, and self-reflective—they’ve worked on themselves and are interested in digging in and doing more. They are high-achievers who feel like they have it together in many areas of their lives—except their weight. They’ve been trying to follow all of these crappy diets and exercise regimes that just don’t work for them. They desperately want to lose weight—to feel vital, happy and sexy again. They want to reclaim their sass.
You are tired of struggling and obsessing about your weight. You’ve gained and lost, and gained and lost again. Perhaps you eat right but then don’t exercise or vice versa. Instead of focusing on friends and fun at parties, you keep debating whether to have more chips or cheesecake. You feel like you’re in a constant battle with food, vacillating between deprivation and overindulgence.
You’ve spent your adult life trying to obey the diet rules:
Ugh!
You are your own worst critic. Your inner dialogue would scorch wood. You say mean things to yourself that you would never say to another person, or even your dog for that matter. You berate yourself for how you look, telling yourself how you’ve let yourself go and shouldn’t have eaten that. You use harsh words in an attempt motivate yourself to do it differently. In the words of Dr. Phil, “How’s that workin’ for ya?”
You are unhappy and want to lose weight, but can’t seem to get it done. After spending countless dollars, you’re no longer buying what the weight loss industry is selling. You have a sense that losing weight and keeping it off requires deeper work than the latest fad diet offers, but you’re not sure how to go about it. You’re frustrated because you know you’re smart, but this weight thing has you stumped. I hear you.
You are ready to commit the time and emotional energy to do the work. Clients who are successful make this work their top priority. They keep daily food journals, do the homework and most importantly are willing to look inside themselves.
A desire to dig in and understand why. Why are you overeating? Why do you resist exercising? Why are you so hard on yourself? You are completely up for finding the answers to these questions.
You understand that lasting weight loss is a journey, not a quick fix. You know that the weight on your body is a reflection of what’s going on inside. You are ready to address the core problems—your beliefs about food, your body and yourself, rather than applying another patch to the symptom—your weight.
You haven’t lost your sense of humor. You might be frustrated and demoralized, but you aren’t dead for Pete’s sake. You have a sense of humor and you aren’t afraid to use it. It will serve you well in this process. We will work hard, we will uncover new truths, and we will laugh our asses off. Literally.
